A mobile phone (also known as a cellular phone, cell
phone, and a hand phone) is a device
that can make and receive telephone calls over a radio
link while moving around a wide geographic area.
It does so by
connecting to a cellular network provided by a mobile phone
operator, allowing access to the public telephone network. By contrast,
a cordless telephone is used only within the short range of a single,
private base station.
Base stations are low-power
multi-channel two-way radios. When you talk on a mobile phone, you (and perhaps
dozens of other people around you) are talking to a nearby base station. From
that base station your phone call goes into the regular land-line phone system.
Types of Mobile Phones:
A feature phone is
a mobile phone which is priced
at the mid-range in a wireless provider's hardware lineup. The term
"feature phone" is a retronym. It
is intended for customers who want a moderately priced and multipurpose phone
without the expense of a high-end smartphone.
A feature phone has additional functions over and above a basic mobile phone which is only capable of voice calling
and text messaging. Due to the quick progression in capabilities, current
mid-range devices in a carrier's lineup today may be more advanced than
previous high-end devices just a few years ago.
A Smartphone is a mobile
phone built on a mobile operating system, with more advanced
computing capability and connectivity than a feature phone. The first
smartphones combined the functions of a personal digital assistant (PDA),
including email functionality, with a mobile phone. Many modern smartphones
also include high-resolution touchscreens and web browsers that
display standard web pages as well as mobile-optimized sites.
High-speed data access is provided by Wi-Fi, mobile broadband, NFC and Bluetooth.Operating System:

system(OS)used by modern smartphones include Google’s Android, Apple’s iOS, Nokia’s
Symbian, Blackberry Ltd’s Blackberry 10,Samsung’s Bada, Microsoft’s Windows
Phone, Hewlett-Packard’s webOS, and embedded Linux distributions such as Maemo
and MeeGo.
Such
operating systems can be installed on many different phone models, and
typically each device can receive multiple OS software updates over its
lifetime. A few other upcoming operating systems are Mozilla's Firefox
OS, Canonical Ltd.'s Ubuntu Phone, and Tizen.

MMS
is a method of transmitting graphics, video or sound files and short text messages
over wireless networks, esp on mobile phones. The service is related to SMS, which
is more commonly known as text messaging.
